Non-toxic options
Even among non-toxic treatments, there are many options for getting rid of head lice and nits. Some are more effective than others, and some depend less on a product and more on your ability to physically remove all the nits. Your comfort level and personal situation will help you determine the right fit for your family, and we’ve also compiled this list of treatments to help you make the best decision.
Combing and “nit-picking”
Nit-picking should always be part of any lice management plan, but doing nit-picking alone (without the aid of a conditioner-like treatment) is one non-toxic option. It is the most labor-intensive and relies completely on your ability to spot and remove all nits.
Essential oils
These can be highly successful in the removal of lice and nits and include rosemary oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil and others. While some families consistently tout the benefits of essential oils, it is important to consider your situation before you choose an essential oil treatment.
Rosemary oil should not be used for pregnant women, as it has been known to cause miscarriage. Peppermint oil can be dangerous for children, as it can slow or stop breathing. And in cases where you are using a non-toxic treatment as a follow-up to a chemical one, tea tree oil can be dangerous because it will increase absorption and potentially cause more of the toxic chemicals to enter your system. Even on its own, tea tree oil can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people.
The National Pediculosis Association has more information on alternative treatments and tea tree oil in particular.
Mayonnaise, Olive Oil, Vaseline
Some families claim they have used these treatments to “smother” lice and also make it easier to comb lice and nits out of the hair. There are varying reports about how effective these options are, and the effectiveness may vary completely based on how ambitious a parent is about nit-picking.
Enzyme-based shampoos, such as De-Licer
These are similar to essential oils in that you can find them in a ready-to-use shampoo formula, which is easier to apply and can cut down on application time. Where enzyme options differ, however, is in their increased safety.
Because lice shampoos like De-Licer are derived from vegetable enzymes, they are safe for children of any age, as well as pregnant and nursing mothers. There is no potential for allergic reaction, and the enzymes do more than smother or suffocate lice. They actually break down the glue that attaches the nits to the hair shaft, which increases the effectiveness of combing.
