You may find tiny, wingless insects in your hair. These insects are about the size of a sesame seed or smaller. They vary in color from clear (when they hatch) to reddish or black. Intense itching is often an indicator, and it occurs most commonly behind the ears or at the base of the neck. An estimated 60 percent of infested people, however, do not itch.
The eggs or nits are usually the most easily visible sign of lice infestation. These are tear drop-shaped and are “glued” to the hair. They can be very difficult to remove from the strand of the hair because of the glue that binds the eggs to the hair shaft.
